SYNOPSIS

It wasn’t until Cameron that I knew what real darkness was…or that I’d crave it so much.
I’ve let the world weigh down on me; pull me under until nothing makes sense anymore. Maybe that’s how I let myself get into the mess I’m currently in? Maybe that’s how I’m in my current situation with a man I knew could save me from a fate worse than death. Even if being with Cameron, giving him the very part of me, the only part that’s worth anything—my body—might very well ruin me, I have to survive.
Drug lord. Crime Boss. Murderer. I should fear him, be horrified by what he wants from me, by who he is. But instead, I find myself wanting to please him, wanting to give myself over completely.
Because I know that gives me control over him.
Cameron Ashton reins over the gritty underworld, the danger and violence of depravity, from his throne. A pistol is his sword, and apathy is his second-in-command. I know he’s dangerous, know he’ll break me and not think twice. But he’s my only chance, the only way I’ll survive.
He’s possessive and controlling. And he does own me, every part of me. The darkness in him runs stronger, deeper than it ever had in me. Maybe we’re not so different? Maybe giving up my control to Cameron, giving him my very soul, makes me the powerful one?
Maybe, in the end, I’ll be the one who owns him.
Warning: This is a filthy, dark romance. There may be subject matter and triggers that are sensitive to some readers. In the end, this IS a romance, albeit a twisted one. If you’re looking for a story that gives you the warm and fuzzies, this is not the book for you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ker Dukey

My books all tend to be darker romance, edge of you seat, angst filled reads. My advice to my readers when starting one of my titles…prepare for the unexpected.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters growing up. We also used to put on performances by acting out stories. I wanted to become an actress from an early age so I could live out many roles but unfortunately I learned early on that my mind was too active…(I would end up wanting to change the script)
I would watch films or TV shows and think of ways they could have improved the story if they took another direction so I thought it best that I tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light; some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

SYNOPSIS

Dominic

I was the boy who would never be king. The monster who could never be loved.
Gia was just a job. Just another girl caught in a world of monsters.
It didn’t matter that I liked the look of her.
I didn’t care that she cringed when she saw my soul.
I liked it.
I liked her fear.
It called to the beast inside me and I wanted her.
Monsters didn’t get to live happily ever after though. And I neither forgave nor forgot. Old debts needed to be settled. Enemies punished.
It was past time I returned to the family business.
I’d been gone far too long.

Gia

All my life, I believed in fairy tales. Not the Disney kind though. Never those. I always knew life was darker than that.
I was the daughter of a foot soldier. The sister of a snitch. A complete and utter nobody.
Monsters had been part of my life for as long as I could remember, but none as dark as Dominic Benedetti. None as cruel. None as broken.
I had no illusions about what he was. I had no desire to save his soul. And I couldn’t care about his bleeding heart.
But love wasn’t always beautiful. It wasn’t always kind or sweet. It could be a twisted, ugly bitch.
I’d always known this was the kind I’d find. The only kind that could touch me.
Because some of us, we belonged in the dark.
And Dominic and I belonged in the dark.

My Review
5 Villains Need Love, too Stars

In This Is War, Baby and This Is War, Baby we learned a little about Gabriel Sharpe, the bad guy, the devil, the villain, the rapist, and many of us including me wanted a story about Gabe, because why not? Even villains need love and understanding. So when I received the ARC for This Isn’t Over, Baby I was the happiest person in the world, because K. Webster is one of my most favorite dark romance author ever.

Not to reveal to much of the story, I will give you as little as I can, because with a book like this one, everything is a spoiler.

In the very beginning of the story, we get a look into Gabe’s past. We get to see what made Gabe the man he is today. For most of his childhood years he lived in hell his father created, so to escape that hell, he needed to be ruthless, stronger than his father, he needed to become a monster.

For almost nineteen years, he has been watching his daughter grow up without her real father, her biological father. What his daughter never knew was that her father was never far away, always keeping close eye on his baby girl. Until one night changes everything, the night Gabe finds his love, not knowing she’s as crazy as him, Harley Quinn to his Joker.

You know it’s you.
It’s always been you.
You’re my world.

That’s the night the rollercoaster starts, with so many twists and turns that will make your head spin, give you whiplash and engulf you with it’s darkness. In this story, the many question we had are answered but also many of them are thrown in. This Isn’t Over, Baby will succeed your wildest imaginations.

With every K. Webster book, I was more and more impressed. This Isn’t Over, Baby is not what I expected. I didn’t expect the direction this story took. I was blown away. I didn’t even see it coming. Kristi always writes books that are 100% original and with This Isn’t Over, Baby is no different, that’s the one reason why I love Krista’s books but main reason is, that every book I read from her is unlike anything I have ever read. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is open-minded and who loves a good dark romance.

• My favorite quotes •

  • A life without you is no life at all. I can assure you, I will die before you…because I can’t mentally fathom something happening to you or being here without you. My mind would crush in on itself. If you needed to breathe, I’d give my last breathe. All for you, sweet girl.
  • Sometimes we have to hurt the one we love in order to keep them.
  • I’m no longer that girl. Because now I am his. I belong to Hades. I am Persephone.
  • Love is a wicked little creature. It slithers into your life and sinks it’s teeth into you whether you like it or not. Love doesn’t care about social norms and boundaries. Love takes whatever the fuck it wants.
  • Gabe is this dark thunderstorm that came up over my horizon, decimated everything in his path, and swept me away with his torrential presence. Who needs light when the dark nourishes your entire being?
  • I’ll follow you anywhere. Even into the darkness. Especially into the darkness.
  • I mark her as mine because she is. All mine. Even when she’s being a crazy bitch.
  • “I’ll go to hell one day for all of this.”
    “I’ll go with you.”
“You don’t belong in hell, sweet girl. You’re an angel.”
    “I’m no angel.”

SYNOPSIS

The heart-pounding finale to the USA Today bestselling Cartel trilogy.

People aren’t born monsters.
They’re made that way.
They’re created, fuelled by one singular moment in time when their universe shatters.
I’d been with Dornan Ross for the better part of a decade. Slept in his bed, sewn up his wounds, tasted his blood, seen inside his soul.
But even I wasn’t prepared for what he did.
I should have known it would always come down to this, from the very moment I laid eyes on him in that motel.
I should have known his salvation was too good to be true.
Because it’s all gone now, the dark secret love I had for him bleeding away in the violent reality that came afterwards.
Now, there’s only hate.
Now, I just want to escape.
Even if it means I have to kill him to be free.

This is the conclusion to Cartel’s trilogy.

EXCERPT

“Your father would never allow this,” I said, staring at the dress Dornan had laid out on the bed. I didn’t have my burner phone with me. I couldn’t call John. Fuck! I needed to call John.
Right.
Now.
Dornan smirked, standing before me and tugging the hem of my dress. I resisted, holding on to that hem with everything I had. Dornan raised his eyebrows and took hold of my wrists, squeezing them just enough to show his strength.
“Allow what?”
I rolled my eyes, trying to shake his grip off, but he was having none of it. He tightened his fingers around my wrists, and they throbbed in protest.
“A trip to Vegas. A white dress. Look at what you’re wearing!”
He shrugged. “Maybe we’re going to have a nice dinner.”
“It’s the middle of the morning,” I shot back. My wrists were on fire. There’d be marks on them tonight.
“Maybe we’re going to have a nice brunch,” Dornan said, his jaw tensed, his demeanor no longer amused. Now, he just looked fed up.
“I’m not marrying you,” I said, the words out of my mouth before I could think twice.
He slapped me across the face so hard I tasted blood. My wrists were free, though, and purely on instinct I punched him in the face, as hard as I could.
Right in the nose.
The nose that John had broken the night before. Teamwork.
Blood exploded from his face and he stepped back, cupping his hands over his nose. All I could see was his eyes; black, cold, determined. The pain of my blow hadn’t angered him, or so it seemed. No, it seemed that the violence had only strengthened his resolve.
He took his hands away and blood dripped onto his shirt; a chilling grin spreading across his face. His nose was bent slightly, and red.
Oh, Jesus. I was going to pay for that.
He came at me like a fucking CIA operative; blunt, fast, effective. He grabbed my hair and yanked, spinning me until I was in his arms. Before I could break free, he had his arms locked around my neck, squeezing against my carotid artery, and within a matter of seconds, the room went black.

In Chickasaw County, Oklahoma, there is a manmade lake. There used to be a small, natural lake there filled with bass, crappie and bream. My grandfather would fish in those waters, wearing thigh-high waders alongside the tall wading birds poking around for fish eggs. It was rumored that the waters had healing powers, that the native people drank from the natural springs to heal ailments and to purify the spirit.

As kids we swam there, even as the township enlarged the lake and pushed hard to attract campers and speed boaters, jet skiers and anglers, anything other than us local kids learning to do underwater handstands and doggy paddle. I was an okay swimmer, I guess, at least before I developed breasts, but Storm and Farren were champions, the very best. They were the strongest swimmers in the school district, and nobody could keep up with them.

After the age of ten, I only entered the water in shorts and a T-shirt, no matter how hot the summer sun, no matter how few people were swimming or roaming the shore. I used to think I stopped wearing a bathing suit because I’d gotten my period or because my breasts were bigger than any other ten-year-old west of the Mississippi. Sometimes I speculated it was because of the murder, that stripping down in front of strangers, letting them really see me, had become nothing short of unbearable. I hated to be vulnerable.

After they found the Dodge Dart, I realized that maybe it was just my subconscious calling to me. Avoid the lake, it’s a watery grave, a family crypt that is too saturated with history.

It was the summer after I graduated high school that they found the Dart. Eight years were enough for the scandal to settle, even in a town like Sulphur; they’d put it to rest, especially after the murder/suicide on the campground out by the highway. Just some other drunk and homicidal idiots, but at least not from my family. The gossip had gotten quieter and quieter until it was barely more than a whisper from the grocery cart behind me in line at the store or the big-eared teenager handing out rental shoes at the bowling alley. I could see it in their eyes, but at least strangers had stopped asking. They’d stopped talking behind my back and, most importantly, stopped staring. Until that one hot July when they’d dredged both lakes, Veteran’s and Arbuckle, using up city money to elevate the dams and make improvements for tourism.

I was in the trailer swatting flies and leafing through a Sears catalogue when Stacey Dobson rapped on the screen door, yelling, “Aimeee!” and got me tripping over chairs on my way to the door, convinced that a tornado must be tearing through.

“They found your dad’s car! At the bottom of the lake!”

Her cheeks were flushed pink from running in the stagnant heat, and circles of darker purple stained the armpits of her jumper.

“What?” I asked. I remembered standing in the doorframe. I thought about his body on the floor, how his skin felt like wet plastic wrap over raw liver after all signs of life had left him. The look of death in his eyes was really the most sober I could remember ever seeing him.

“The car was at the bottom of the lake! They drained it to widen the lakebed and there it was, sitting out in the middle.”

“Was it empty?” I asked her, my eyes narrowing to take her in. She was nearsighted, the Dobson girl, and in all remedial classes at the high school. She was a few years older than me. As children we’d been amicable in a freeze tag, king of the mountain, Barbie-sharing sort of way, but after my dad died, I looked at everyone suspiciously, wondering what they could want from me. I would have no friends in this place.

Stacey looked desperate and disheveled, sweat along her hairline, pinpoints of red starting to appear on her face.

“Don’t know, they just brought in a tow truck to pull it out. You can only see the top of it.”

“How do you know it’s my dad’s car?” The words felt sharp as they exited my mouth, like they had tines and were looking to plunge into any soft surface. Stacey’s chubby cheeks, the soft round of her gut. It had been a long time since I’d said my dad, words I typically avoided at all costs.

“Divers,” Stacey said. Her eyes lit up like streetlights through a dismal fog. The lack of news in this town turned everyone into vultures for tragedy.

“Let’s go,” I said. I jammed my keys in my pocket and threw my yellow and green windbreaker over my shoulder. Grabbing a pack of cigarettes and a lighter my mom had left on the counter, I switched off the light and promised myself that I wouldn’t stick around this damned town only to witness my own downfall. Damned if I’d let them all stand around defaming and slandering my family with not a one of us to hold them accountable for their local poison—a bitter mouthful of gossip. Show them that an Olsen, at least this Olsen, didn’t have mercy for anyone dumb enough to cross her.

SHE STOLE MY PROPERTY

I’ll never forget the night I caught her sneaking around my place. She thought she could steal from me and get away with it, but I have no intention of letting her get away at all. Mian Ross has a lesson to learn, and I’m going to be the one to teach it to her.

HE STOLE MY SON

I’ll never forget the night I made the second biggest mistake of my life. It was supposed to be a simple job, but it quickly became so much more—one that cost my freedom and cost my son. Angel Knight became my worst nightmare… and now, he’ll never let us go.

293av4i
I’VE NEVER FOCUSED on anything as hard as I did at this moment… and for the past hour of moments. I was little more than a horny teen watching her splash around in the pool.                 “I know that look in your eyes, son. I haven’t stopped looking at your mother that way since the day I met her.”
I momentarily forgot it was my father and the respect he demanded when my lip curled with irritation. “What are you talking about?”
“Mian.”
When he said her name, I reluctantly ripped my gaze away from her now sitting idly by the pool with her slutty ass friend, Erin. She’d been giving me the eye ever since she stepped foot through the door. “The kid?” Her name, spoken aloud, left me exposed and defensive as if I’d been caught doing something I had no business doing—like devouring her young, supple body with my gaze every time she came around.
“Yeah. The kid. The kid you’d fuck six ways to Sunday as soon as her father’s back turned.”
“Jesus, pops. She’s fifteen! I’m. Not. A Fucking. Pedophile.”
“I never said you were, but I also know firsthand how someone who looks like her can be hard to resist. She’d make you throw away your morals and your goddamn soul for just a little taste and all she’d have to do is whisper, “Yes.”
“Bullshit.”
“So you don’t want in her young pussy?”
“Don’t talk about her pussy,” I growled. “You’re even sicker than I am.” The knowing glow in his eyes told me just how much I let slip when I snapped at him.
“You’re only nineteen and still a kid yourself. I know what you’re thinking.”
He watched me, dangling the bait. He was a lot more calculating and patient than I and would wait as long as he had to for me to pick it up. I sighed and gave in. “What am I thinking?”
“You’re wondering just how far you could push those legal boundaries before your conscience gets the better of you.”
“Wrong.”
“Excuse me?”
I didn’t miss a beat and said, “I’m wondering how many of her boundaries I could push before I destroy her.” He swore and shoved his hand through his hair when I gave him the confirmation he sought.
I wanted her.
My mind was made up and I wasn’t changing it. Not for him, her father… or her.
“No.”
“I’m afraid it’s too late to stop me.”
“You are not going to pursue her, Angeles.” Whenever he used my full name, I knew he was serious.
“Maybe not today but she’s mine, pop.”
He sighed the same way I had when he knew he was defeated. “At least allow her to grow up. She’s got years before she’ll be ready to be a lady of this life. Even then, Theo may kill you before he allows you to take her.”
“When I do take her,” I said, letting him know I would take her with or without Theo’s approval, “the first thing I’m exorcising from her mind is her father.”
“Meaning?”
“She’s too dependent on him.”
“She’s fifteen,” he reminded me unnecessarily. I was well aware of her age. It was the only thing that has kept me from between her thighs as long as I have.
“I mean her emotional dependence on him. She’s a daddy’s girl. The only man she’ll need to answer to is me.”

Genres: Romantic Suspense, Erotic Romance, Organized Crime

Synopsis:

Calisto Donati

She was just a woman. That’s what Calisto wanted to tell himself; that’s what he wanted to believe. Emma was nothing more than a woman. There were other women for him to want. To obsess over.
It couldn’t be Emma Sorrento.
Not for Calisto.
She was taken.
She was claimed.
She was not his.
In a few days, Calisto would hand her off, and that would be that. He wondered why it wouldn’t be that easy to let her go.
What good had saving her done?
He had simply taken her from one monster to give her to another.

Emma Sorrento

Emma slid on her mask. All someone would need to do was look close enough to see what was really beneath the sheer falseness of her smile.
At the other end of the table, Emma found her lies staring her right in the face.
He smirked.
And winked.
Calisto Donati was her worst mistake, her greatest shame, and the one thing she still wanted more than anything. Emma could still feel him all over her, long after his touch and kiss was gone.In thirty days, her entire world had changed—he had changed her.
Emma had a feeling that if she played another game with Calisto, she would surely lose.
She had already lost once.
Wasn’t it enough?

EXCERPT- THIN LIES

“It does hurt me,” Calisto said before he could stop himself.

He wanted to take the words back immediately.

Emma stilled in the passenger seat. “Then why play?”

To remember.

To punish himself.

To apologize.

“For a lot of different reasons,” Calisto settled on saying. “But tonight, I played so that you wouldn’t have to. You didn’t seem comfortable. I didn’t think you wanted to have everyone looking at you after what happened. It was a small sacrifice.”

“But you hurt now,” she said, seeming confused. “Don’t you?”

“But you didn’t have to.”

For Calisto, that was all that mattered.

Turning his head, Calisto stared out the opened driver’s window. He wondered if anyone had noticed that both he and Emma had left the dinner party without a goodbye. He supposed it didn’t make a difference.

Calisto didn’t mind Emma’s presence disturbing his peace, either.

“Calisto?” Emma asked softly.

“Hmm?”

Her hand rested on his thigh, and Calisto jerked in the seat at the innocent touch. The problem was, her touch couldn’t be innocent at all. Not with the way he currently felt, the things he had done, or the lines he had already crossed with a mighty “fuck you.” He hadn’t been expecting it, and he didn’t even hear Emma move in her seat.

Calisto barely had the chance to spin around and face Emma again before her mouth pressed against his. It was soft at first, smooth like her plump lips, and then her fingers dug into his leg like she was demanding something from him.

He didn’t know what it was.

Instinctively, Calisto wanted to push her away. He wanted to kiss her back, too. The crazy side of his brain won, the side that listened to his selfish wants and not his needs.

Or maybe he needed it, too.

Calisto didn’t know.

But he did grab onto Emma’s dress. He fisted the fabric around his taut knuckles, and pulled her a little closer. His tongue swept the seam of her lips, wanting more, needing to be deeper, seeking her heat and taste.

A little wouldn’t hurt, right?

Just a little more.

Emma sighed a sweet sound, giving into his unspoken demand by parting her lips. Calisto took the offering for what it was, kissed her harder, and let his tongue war with hers until she was gasping for air. Pulling away enough to catch a breath, Emma tipped her head up and hummed.

Calisto couldn’t help himself but lean forward and kiss her chin.

He was fucking stupid.

Why did she make him so stupid?

“I should go in and say goodbye,” he heard Emma say.

Calisto was too distracted by the flimsy fabric of her dress in his hands. A little pull with just enough strength and he knew that the dress would rip. She was close, and he could grab her around the waist before pulling her into the backseat.

The windows were tinted.

No one would see.

A little more wouldn’t hurt.

BOOK REVIEW | War & Peace Duet by K. Webster

THIS IS WAR, BABY review.

this-is-war-baby-front-onlyWhen I received the ARC for this book, I was pretty scared to read it. I would go to the instagram of the author and there would be a lot of pictures, where she wrote things like the darkest book K. Webster has ever written. The first book I read from her was Dirty Ugly Toy (also a dark romance, but not so dark as I thought I would be) and the second book I read from her was This Is War, Baby.. and I can tell you I was scared as fuck to read this book. When I started, it was okay..boyfriend and girlfriend foreplay, okay that’s nice. Then freaking BAM! Shit hit the fan and I was left biting my fingernails, hoping Baylee would survive the nightmare, and poor Brandon.  It scared the freaking shit out of me.

“This can’t be happening.
Not to me.”

Baylee getting kidnapped by her father’s best friend Gabe. He took away her life in three second. Everything she held dear lost in three fucking seconds.

“Now, say goodbye to your bedroom and your pussy-ass boyfriend. You’ll never see them again.”

Baylee was a normal 17 year old girl, a virgin with a boyfriend she loved and friends who adored her. And now, she’s a toy. Used, raped, tortured and brainwashed. She lost everything dear. Nothing was the same anymore. Gabe, her captor and the friend of her father, stoled everything from her, her life, her virginity and her freedom. He used her and abused her. He did unholy things to her (POOR CUCUMBERS, POOR CUCUMBERS, I will never be able to look at cucumbers the same way I did before.), train her to be a perfect little slave and all I wanted to do is throw up, that man was so fucking crazy. Then two weeks later, he sold her to the highest bidder with a promise he will come back for her, and make her his. Possibility of being sold to man worse then Gabe is real.

“He’s the monster in my life – but he’s the one I know – the one I’m familiar with.”

Baylee finds herself being owned by a young gorgeous rich man who has a slew of mental issues and is in a prison of his fears and obsessions.

“For some reason, I don’t obsess over numbers and germs and patterns. Each time you open your mouth, I’m fixated on your words. I’m drawn to the way you say them. When I’m around you, I don’t obsess over my problems because I obsess over you.”

I fell for War immediately. There was something different about him. I have never read about such a character. His obsessions and his fears break a reader’s heart and his POV is realistically and perfectly, brilliantly done. War was something else. He was unlike any captor I’ve read before. I’m pretty sure War will win you over from the moment you’ll meet him. His life story is heartbreaking and everything he went through would you make wanna hug him and wash away the fear and pain.

The man who brought her, War, will become her everything. Her saviour, her anchor, her war and her hope. and she will become his PEACE, his love and saviour. Everything happened so quickly, she was kidnapped, raped and sold in the matter of two weeks, and now she is falling in love with the man who brought. Their relationship blossomed and grew. Even though War and Baylee made an odd match at first, they overtime shared something so special. They became each other’s everything.

The writing was captiviting, brilliant. The storyline was exciting and the three main character were complex and  so well developed. This story had many twists and turns that will keep you on your toes but also there are some scenes that will offend you, leave you disturbed and make you cringe. This is War, Baby, told for multiple POVs is a fast paced dark romance with a mixture of suspense, violence, mystery, conspiracy and erotica as Baylee journeys to uncover the truth of why she was stolen and finding her way home.

STORY ENDS WITH A TERRIFYING CLIFFHANGER.
(I recommended it to all, who love dark romance.)

THIS IS LOVE, BABY review.

image1If I am being totally honest, I was scared to read this as much as I was scared to read the first book This Is War, Baby. When I fifnished TIWB I joined a group on facebook, and I spoke about all my theories for TILB, and none, and I MEAN NONE, WERE EVEN A SLIGHTEST BIT the same as the real story. Kristi torn out my heart and stepped all over it. And I really couldn’t really get over what happened in the previous book.

The rules state the pawn
is the weakest piece.
But if the pawn makes
it to the other side, it
gets promoted. The pawn
can become queen. And
then it’s not weak at all.

I can’t write much about this book without spoiling the book for people who are yet to read this book. If I start talking I will reveal  a vital plot to the story and I don’t want to wreck it for you all of you.

This delusional bastard thinks he loves me.
Love doesn’t make you kidnap someone.
Love doesn’t make you violate someone.
Love doesn’t make you murder someone.

I will just write down some quotes without revealing so much of the book. The questions you all had in Book #1 will be resolved in this book…

I tear my gaze to his. “You’re fucking sick.” His gun raises and he points it at me. “And you’re fucking dead.” Pop! Pain explodes in my chest.

“WAR!!!” That voice. Her voice. It’s my heavenly oasis although it sounds distant. I don’t want to close my eyes but they’re already shut and spiralling into darkness.

Some games he will not win because…. LOVE always wins. My LOVE will conquer all. The war has only just begun and the winner will be me.

  • This Is War, Baby

TILB  picks up right where the first book ended.  There are many challenges War and Baylee need to overcome. With both external forces and personal ‘issues’ this unconventional romance between two very different people had a lot going against them and their love. But both of them are determent to return to each other.

We find Baylee right back at the cabin in the woods again, held captive by Gabe yet again, but this time her thoughts are consumed with War’s death and her love for him, we see her fighting back more so than ever before..

I basically couldn’t put this book down. It’s a suspenseful page-turner from page one that just sucked me in. Just so you know, it’s entirely different in so many ways then the other books about captivity.. And that ending! She managed to throw a spin in there right at the very ending leaving the door open for a future book…or just to f*ck with us. I’m not sure which.

War was such a tortured hero. I attached to him in This is War, Baby and when that ending hit, I was devasted more for him than Baylee. His history, his ‘issues’ Baylee was his therapy and he just needed her. Period. He was one those heroes I attached myself too. I couldn’t stand him sufforing.

My favorite quotes:

  • My nucleus. My only reason. I can only exist fully with her. And I am nothing without her.
  • Pain threatens to rip me in two. This useless heart of mine is pounding. Thunderous. And excruciating. Now I understand how one could die of a broken heart. It’s happening to me. I’m drowning in despair.
  • Deep down in the dark depths of my heart, I wanted to believe that he’d lived.
  • The black king and white queen are the only ones left on the board that’s no longer devoid of color. It drips with the crimson blood of the defeated and we stand together.
  • He took my innocence, took my love, and who knows what else? All he gave me in exchange was heartache and pain. And the monster he created. He gave me the dragon.

Time to show them I’m not a pawn.
I’m the motherfucking queen.

This is war, baby. And I will win.

PROLOGUE:

Present Day: Michael

It all happened so quickly. I chased the sound of her desperate cries, her dull voice begging for someone to help her.  I turn the corner of the abandoned warehouse careful not to make my presence known. I breathe through my mouth because the stench in the air is so vile smelling like piss, death and filth. There is silence. I can’t make out her cry anymore.  The only sound I catch is the water dripping from the leak in the roof onto the concrete floor.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

“Help me. Dear God, please help me,” she cries out. Her voice sounds weaker than before, as if she’s giving up, resolving that no one will answer her plea for help.

I step in something sticky forcing me to glance down at my foot that is now covered in blood. My eyes follow the trail of crimson to the dead body that is decomposing in the corner. I want to scream. My gut clenches thinking of all the horrors my girl must have been exposed to and how it’s all my fault.

I failed her.

I won’t fail her now.

Never again.

I take a few more steps, hiding behind a palette of wooden crates, peaking between them, I spot her. My girl. She’s sitting in a metal chair. Her wrists are tied behind her back and her ankles are tied together. Her head is down so I can’t see her face but I notice she’s still wearing the same clothes as she was the day they took her. I silently will her to lift her head. I need to get a look at her face. I need to see she’s okay.

“No one’s here to save you sweetheart.” I hear a taunting voice speak to her.

I’m here to save her you fuck.

His body comes into my view as he stands in front of her, slowly bending so they’re eye level. I watch, struggling not to do anything stupid, hearing Vic’s voice in my head reminding me not to be a cowboy.

Patience.

Her life is at stake.

He cups her face not so gently and forces her to look up at him. He blocks my view of her so I shift to my right hoping to catch a glimpse.

“My father will kill you.” She shouts. “Do you hear me? He will kill you! Just let me go.”

He laughs. “Your father can’t save you little girl just like he couldn’t save his best man. And when you’re dead, he won’t do anything either just like he didn’t after I killed Val. Daddy’s not in control anymore, you’re at my mercy.”

I freeze for a moment at the mention of my father. The man who has his back to me, the man torturing my girl, is the same man who killed my father. I didn’t even have a chance to process the information because his hand reared back and slapped Nikki across her face. He takes a step backward, and she comes into my view, lifting her head slowly. Her eye make up is running down her face. One of her cheeks is red, branded from that son of a bitch’s hand and yet she’s still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

Something is triggered inside of me and  I know it’s time to end this nightmare. I straighten my posture, my hand securely holding my gun at my side. Slowly I lift my hands, my gun cocked aiming the barrel of it straight at the back of the enemy’s head. I look at Nikki once more, she’s all the strength I need to pull the trigger. She turns her head, her dull brown eyes meet mine and for the slightest moment I see life reborn in them.

I take one hand off my gun and lift a finger to my lips, signaling her to stay silent. I want the motherfucker to be surprised when I riddle him with bullets. I hold her gaze and hope she trusts I won’t let anything else happen to her.

I’m here Princess

You’re safe now.

I gradually step around the pallet I was hiding behind and creep up behind him, keeping a steady eye on my girl. I wrap my finger around the trigger. This is it. I’m about to kill a man. I’m about to put someone else’s blood on my hands. I am about to walk in my father’s shoes.

I avert my eyes to the back of my target’s head, tearing my gaze away from Nikki. I lift the gun and then it happens…

“Mikey watch out!!” She screams.

I pull the trigger.

All of a sudden my gun isn’t the only one going off in the warehouse. The sound of gunfire erupts as I watch my bullet pierce my victim. I turn toward Nikki, hurrying to make my way to her. My victim falls face forward onto the floor, a single shot to the head killing him instantly. Nikki screams out as his blood splatters onto her. She’s shaking her head screaming no as I struggle to make my way to her.

“Mikey Get down!!” She screams through her sobs.

I don’t fully comprehend what she’s saying. I think I’m still reeling from the fact that the man I put a bullet in was about to kill her— just like he killed my old man. All I cared about was taking her in my arms and holding onto her for dear life. I needed to touch her, to feel her, to know she really was okay.

She is shaking her head violently forcing me to focus on what she is trying to warn me of. I glance over my shoulder, eyes wide as I see the ambush Victor and his men are taking part in, guns blazing as they seek revenge on the rival family that held his daughter captive for two days.

They don’t go down easily and men start appearing from all over the warehouse, firing back at Victor and his gang. I lift my gun, ready to help Victor, out of the corner of my eye I notice a man to my left, his gun aimed at Nikki. I keep my gun aimed at the men firing against Victor and look over my shoulder towards my girl. She’s oblivious to the gun pointed at her and there is little she could do to protect herself since she’s still tied to the chair. I walk backwards towards her, debating if I have time to take out the gunman.

I turn my gun towards the man aiming at Nikki but he pulls the trigger.

I’m too late.

“No!” I hear myself cry out as I run, attempting beat the speed of the bullet. I dive on top of her, my body shielding hers, knocking her and the chair she is tied to backwards as the bullet sears through my flesh.

I’m here Princess. You’re safe.

The gun slips from my hand as I roll off Nikki. I stare up at the ceiling. I hear her crying beside me, I try to reach for her hand but I can’t move. The heat sears through my body. I’m trying to contain the blood, but it pours from my wound uncontrollably. There are more gunshots fired. I hear Nikki’s cries become muffled until everything fades to black.

But then they took her. Stole her. Imprisoned her.

Now Kill’s carefully laid plans for vengeance are complete. He craves action, retribution-the blood of his enemies. War has begun. War is all they’ll know until they’ve paid their penance. He will get her back-and rewrite their destiny . . .

Excerpt:

“Let’s go.” Mo cocked his head at the undergrowth. “The sooner this is over, the sooner we can blow some shit up and get home.”
I tried to hide my slight sway and the way even the darkness hurt my eyes. But of course, he saw right through it.
Mo came closer. “You’re the prez, Kill. You’re the one pulling the strings on this party. But tonight, let us be the ones in front, yeah?”
Grasshopper froze. I was well known for being on the front line. I never asked others to do what I was afraid to do myself. I shook my head, then stopped immediately.
Motherfucker, that hurts.
Swallowing my groan, my shoulders slumped. “Normally, I’d take a swing at you for sprouting such bullshit. But . . . you might be right.”
Honesty was a weakness, but it was also a strength. My men trusted me because I wasn’t stupid. If they had a better idea, I listened. If they had reasons to avoid something, I paid attention.
And this was one of those times.
Grasshopper’s boots crunched a twig as he shifted. “You’re still the boss. We aren’t protecting you or doing shit on your behalf; you’re just doing us a favor by not getting in the way.”
As if anyone believes that shit.
“We’ll get her back, dude. And we’ll destroy those motherfuckers.” Grasshopper slapped a hand on my shoulder.
I winced as my headache flared, but I appreciated the gesture. Fuck, I appreciated everything he’d done—even if I was livid.
I owed him.
If it hadn’t have been for Hopper, I might’ve bled out or turned into a damn zucchini before anyone noticed. He’d been the one to pop around when he couldn’t get me on the phone. He was the one who found me passed out.
Mo pulled his gun free and clicked off the safety. “Let’s go.” Like an evil spirit, he dissolved into the tree line.
Grasshopper took off after him, leaving me to bring up the rear—like a rookie or some idiotic prospect.
The trees were watchdogs.
The shadows were death’s pockets to hide in.
We remained silent as we merged with the darkness, slinking stealthily through leaves and cobwebs.
Every step throbbed my head.
Every duck to avoid branches sent queasiness splashing through my skull.
Cleo was nearby and we were about to rescue her.
That was all the incentive I needed to do my fucking job as a Pure Corruption president and lover to my woman.
I’m stronger than a damn concussion.
However, the closer we got to the large wooden fence barricading Dagger Rose, the more I feared I might not be a help but a hindrance. Mo was right to put me at the back. My muscles trembled and the cold sweat of illness never let up. I could barely stomach the pain of walking, let alone running into battle and firing a loud gun.
Shit.
Moving past the glade where I’d brought Cleo, my fists tightened as I recalled her peering through the hole in the fence and witnessing her old home.
It hurt like hell that she couldn’t remember everything we’d shared, but at the same time, I was glad. Glad that she couldn’t recall the night we both lost everything.
My stomach convulsed as a rancid thought crusted my mind.
She’ll know.
She’ll remember what I did.
My father would’ve had ample time to tell her what happened. To show her the false statement and guild lies into truths.
Everything he said would reek of dishonesty—but one fact remained.
One undisputed fact that would make her hate me for eternity.
What I did was unforgivable.
I was the one who pulled the trigger.
I was the one to slaughter the two people she cared for most in this world.
How can she ever forgive me once she knows?

3. 44 Chapters About 4 Men by BB Easton
Release Date: February 2nd 2016

Screenshot_4School psychologists aren’t supposed to write books about sex. Doing so would be considered “unethical” and “a fireable offense.” Lucky for you, ethics was never my strong suit.

After spending years trying to spice up my sex life, I gave up and took to my journal. Perhaps my gorgeous, cold, number crunching husband simply wasn’t capable of the kind of passion I’d come to expect. After all, my ex-boyfriends—a skinhead turned US Marine turned motorcycle club outlaw, a baby-faced punk rocker out on parole, and a heavy-metal bass player—were every bit as tattooed and testosterone-fueled as the leading men in my favorite romance novels. If I couldn’t have that kind of passion again in real life, at least I could write about it. Right? Nobody had to know. It would be my little secret.

Well, guess what? My husband read that shit.

And guess what else? He upped his fucking game.

Drunk with power and under the dubious advisement of my best friend and colleague, I began testing the limits—crafting journal entries specifically designed to manipulate Ken’s behavior. For the most part, he responded beautifully…except when he didn’t.

Told through actual journal entries, steamy short stories, personal emails, a few haikus, and at least one dirty limerick, 44 Chapters About 4 Men chronicles the year I spent toying with my husband’s mind and ignoring all ethical standards of psychology. I decided to publish it in the hopes that someone out there might benefit from my discovery—or at least laugh at it—but in doing so I’m risking more than just my career. If word of this book gets back to Ken, I could lose the very man I’ve worked so hard to perfect.

MY REVIEW
5 STARS!!!

5-you’re-dirty-little-ugly-toy-bunny-stars…

This is my first book by the author and it certainly won’t be my last. This author will have your heart racing, and begging for answers as she takes you on this intense ride. If you can handle the dark elements, then this is a story. K Webster will slowly take you and her characters, from the darkness into the light.

From the beginning, she puts me on the very edge, I didn’t only fear the hero, I also feared the path in which he was leading me. But I loved every single minute of it.

“I’m captivated by the dark moon that orbits my world.”

This story clung to me, sometimes like a iron grip around my throat choking me, and then other times whispering so gently in my ear.

This is a dark and twisted story, following two people, Jessica and Braxton.

The story starts out with a man who takes what he wants and then viciously lets it go. At the beginning of the story we are taken to the dregs of UK society: the drug addicted and those who sell their bodies.

Jessica is a street prostitute and drug addict who lives in the U.K. She is poor and her addiction to heroin is the reason she makes herself a prostitute for cash or drugs. Once she was a normal woman, but one day changed everything for her. She’s been a sex slave, she’s been roughly handled, beaten, raped and mentally abused. She escapes her past by losing herself and losing touch with reality through her drug addiction.

One day a very rich man propositions her. Be his for 6 months and she’ll leave with more money than she could ever imagine.
That man was Braxton Kennedy. He is a very wealthy man with a sadistic, aggressive, fetichistic personality. He is a single and very attractive man of dark childhood. He is sexually dominant and his twisted fetish is to find women of low status, break them, and treat them like a worthless toy. He invites them into his house, he provides them with every luxury in return for total submission and rough sex. They both sign a legal 6-month BDSM contract according to which he has to pay them a large amount of money in return for their total submission.
By the end of the contract period, Brax “gets rid of” his toy and is in search for the next one. He is always brutal and he never gets emotionally intimate with them.

I want a new toy. One that I can restore. An ugly thing turned pristine and shiny.

Jessica, in desperate need of her next hit and well beyond caring what this man is capable of doing to her, she doesn’t hesitate. Braxton wants Jessica to be his new ‘toy’ but Jessica isn’t like rest of them. She is fearless, she likes being humiliated, she enjoys pain. She begins to like him and is willing to submit to his urges regardless his cruelty. She’s the perfect masochist for Brax and he begins to care about her in his own twisted way. He becomes very controlling of her life and every move, and makes sure she knows it when he doesn’t approve.
But as time passes, neither get what their expecting. Tides turn and secrets are unveiled and no one is left untouched. He starts seeing something in her that he recognizes all too well.

Bunny reminds me of me. And that changes everything.

And when outside forces threaten to tear them apart, they’re both forced to admit that they’re not playing a game anymore. Maybe they never really were.

Their past played out as another layer in the story. In flashbacks, we get glimpses of Braxton’s childhood and the horrors he witnessed as a young boy, who just wanted the love of his mommy. And wanted some food. And socks. And then there is Jessica’s past. Her past was slowly developed throughout the story. Soon in the story, we find out that she isn’t from UK as Braxton thinks she is, and that she has not lived a life of poverty her whole life. Slowly her past catches up to her. What will be his toy’s fate once he finds out her true origin and when the contract expires?

Throughout the story, I didn’t only hate Braxton, but feared him as well. Almost in the beginning I realized that there was something more to his character, something deeper than the cold heartless man he was portraiying. He’s choosing these toys for a reason. Is it because they won’t be missed? Is it because he can control every aspect of their lives? Is it because they are desperate for love and affection, and therefore easy to manipulate? Or is it because they reminding him so someone he used to know. I loved the complexity that K. Webster brought to Braxton’s character. He was possessive, controlling, sadistic. There were many different layers to his personality. Every reaction he showed was believable.

He spewed a lot of hate towards Jessica and inflicted pain for his pleasure. What he didn’t count on was how she would react or that he will eventually care for his bunny. And that was a game changer. Because he never once cared for someone and now that Jessica enter into his life and turn everything upside down, he started to see a different side of life.

Dirty Ugly Toy was well-written. It was unpredictable and twisted. It was dark and dirty, gritty and it was also nothing like I expected. I was constantly left guessing, wondering, only to be wrong. Braxton will show you that he isn’t really a monster, you thought he was. Because even though Jessica was in the dark like Braxton, she was able to bring light into their lives. The book ended in the way I think it would end. It was a perfect ending to this perfectly twisted story. I recommend this book to all other lovers of dark twisted romance. So read the blurb and get for an unbelievable ride that will leave you wanting more.

ARC received from the author for a honest review.

PROLOGUE:

Alejandra

I was confused.
At least, I remember being confused.

Being called away from school to join my father in the office is not a good thing. The office is where he conducts business. I have been there before but it is no place for a girl like me, or so he says.

The hall somehow looks longer than it ever has before. I walk it not knowing what to expect, clutching my schoolbag to me tightly.

Have I done something wrong? Why did he sound so tense on the phone?
My feet shuffle forward. I swallow hard, looking down at my shoes. My shoelace is undone.

He won’t like that.

I stop where I am to make sure my appearance is near stellar, running my hands through my long, straight black hair and smoothing my hands over the skirt of my private school uniform. I take my time, pulling my white socks up to my knees and being careful not to mark them.

My father didn’t raise a pack of animals. He raised ladies, and in my brothers case, a gentleman.

My siblings and I pride ourselves on being everything my father wished for. The only mob family with grace and humility, I’m sure.

At eighteen, I know my place. My place is to make my father happy. And I do.
At least, I think I do. So far there have been no complaints.

I study hard to maintain an A average, I dress appropriately, never showing too much skin and I watch over my younger sisters with love and care, molding them into the ladies they should be. Even I have to admit, I’m a pretty decent person and I love my family.

There are six of us in total. In order of age, we are: Miguel, who is twenty-four, myself, Veronica, who is sixteen, Carmen, who is fifteen, Patricia, who is thirteen, and Rosa, who is only nine. She was the last of us, born only a year before Mama died. I know Rosa doesn’t remember her. I know it hurts her. She has photos like the rest of us do, but it’s not enough.

My mother’s name was Dorina, affectionately known as Dori to anyone she liked. She met my father when they were both just kids, running around, playing on the street. He threw dirt in her face. Instead of crying like the other girls did, she simply stood and shook the dirt off of her. She walked home that day and told her mama about the silly boy who threw dirt at her. Her mother, my grandmother, laughed joyously and hugged her little girl. She explained, “Oh, gatito, boys are funny in the way they do things. And the worse they treat a girl usually means the more they like them.”

Mama heard this and was set.
She was going to marry that boy.

Fourteen years later, Mama became Mrs. Eduardo Castillo. They lived happily for the length of my mother’s life. She was the only woman in the world who could make my father laugh. He loved her so much that when she died, he mourned. And it scared the crap out of me.

My father is a reasonable man, but something changed during his mourning period. He became colder, more closed off. He started to shut us out.
The only person who can make him see reason is my brother, Miguel.

As I reach the office door, I knock lightly with a shaking hand.

“Come in,” calls a familiar voice.

My brother? My body turns rigid. What is he doing here?

Pushing the door open, I step inside and quietly close the door behind me. I walk to stand in front of the desk my father sits at but look up at my brother who stands behind my father. I haven’t seen him in a year. He looks good. Papa holds a hand at his forehead. He has yet to acknowledge me. I spare a sweet smile for my brother. When he doesn’t return it, my chest aches. Instead, his eyes turn soft and apologetic.

He looks like he’s about to cry.

It’s here I’d like to note that the men in my family don’t cry.

When my father lifts his face, my skin prickles at the look in his eyes. There is something there I haven’t seen before. Something calculating.

I know Papa isn’t a good man, but he is good to us. He’s a family man. He would do anything for us.

He would kill for us.

In fact, I know he has.

I clear my throat and ask gently, “Papa? Is everything okay?”

Surprised at my own ability to hide the quiver in my voice, I stand taller, feigning my calm. My father looks me in the eye. I haven’t noticed till now how much he’s aged since Mama died. The lines in his tanned face have deepened so much that he looks ten years older than his fifty years. The dark skin under his eyes seems as though he mustn’t have slept in months. But the laugh lines around his eyes… they’re gone.

I suppose he doesn’t use them as much as he used to. With my mother gone, he has no one to make him laugh.

“Alejandra,” he motions to the chair opposite his. His rough voice commands, “Sit.”
I don’t want to sit.

I want to run.

Looking to my brother for help. He shakes his head, eyeing the chair. I swallow hard, my heart pounding in time with my steps till I finally seat myself.

Papa sighs then stands. He paces. “I have called you here today to discuss something with you. Something of importance. I’m afraid we need to discuss this quickly. There isn’t much time.”

My brother’s warm brown eyes darken a shade. I see him bite the inside of his cheek. His face turns a deep shade of red and the vein at his temple throbs. It looks as though he’s about to snap.

The sight causes ice-cold fear to coil deep in my belly. Miguel doesn’t lose his temper. He’s a gentleman, patient and controlled.

My heart races. Something is very wrong here.

Not sure what to say, I nod once to let him know I’m listening. He continues. “Grave times we’re in. It’s not enough to be your own people anymore. There’s safety in numbers.” He pauses, planting his palms flat on his desk, leaning toward me. “There is a time in every persons life where sacrifices must be made for the sake of the greater good. Understand?”

I nod. I do understand. I understand that my father spends a lot of time away from home to maintain the good life we have. This is his sacrifice and he makes it without complaint.

I appreciate what he does for us, not that I know for sure what he does. It’s not my business. I’m just a woman.

His lips curve in what I’m sure is an attempt at a smile but it comes off as a grimace. He mutters, “Always a good girl. I’m so lucky to have you.”

My heart beams as warmth spreads through me, melting away some of the frozen fear inside of me, it warms me to my very toes. But my brother’s fists ball so hard that his knuckles turn white. Miguel hisses behind my father, “Tell her.”

Papa’s feeble smile wanes, looking mildly irritated by the interruption. “Yes. Of course.” Moving around the desk, my father sits on the edge of his desk and takes my hand in one of his, patting it gently with the other. As a girl, this was my everything. Looking up into my father’s smiling eyes while he spoke about this and that, it never really mattered what he was talking about, only that his attention was warm and unwavering.

But then he drops a bomb. “You’re going to marry, Dino, son of Vito Gambino.”
He says this without feeling, without reaction, without emotion.

My grip on his hand weakens but he holds it firm, in support? I don’t know. The blood drains from my face. My lips part and my breathing shallows.

My stomach is coiled tighter than a knot. It feels as though my body is attempting to strangle itself.

Licking my dry lips, I utter a quivering and hushed, “Why?”

“The Gambino’s aren’t unlike us. The Italians are family people, but they have some issues amongst themselves. Can’t trust each other. Each family has a different motive. Vito came to me seeking peace. And his offer was welcome. He treated me with respect and spoke to me about where he sees our families in ten years. And his vision,” he squeezes my hand, “is one I share.”

The bridge of my nose aches and my eyes sting. “Papa, I’m only eighteen…”
I’m grasping at straws here. This statement makes no sense even to me. Thankfully, my brother comes to my aid.

Miguel cuts in with, “Raul has been courting Alejandra since they were sixteen, Papa. You gave your blessing. This is…” his anger gets the better of him when he spits, “This is ridiculous. It’s just not… It’s just not done.”

Yes! Oh God, yes!

In the five minutes I’ve been here, I forgot about my boyfriend. He’ll help me. I know he will.

My father stands and spins facing Miguel. In deathly calm, he utters, “You have a better idea? This is an alliance we need, mi hijo. Alejandra understands. Sacrifices must be made. She does this for the family.” He turns to me, eyes full of pride. “It is an honor.”

The first of my tears falls. My throat thick, I whisper, “I don’t want to marry Dino. I want to marry Raul.”

My father turns back to me. “I called Raul in this morning. In promising him Veronica’s hand, he will give you up.”

The words are a slap to my face. Over and over, the pain fills me, crushing me.
Closing my eyes, I don’t even try to be graceful. I lift my hands to cover my face while I sob. “How… c-c-could… he?”

But rather than comfort me, my father just throws salt into the crevice where my heart has been ripped from. “Do not be like that, Alejandra. His father wanted a connection to our family. It’s a privilege.” My father sniffs a laugh. “You didn’t think he loved you, did you?”

Sobs are torn from my throat. My life is falling apart around me.

Miguel appears at my feet, kneeling down but looking up at me. He removes my hands from my face. “If there is a way out of this, I swear to you, Ana, I will find it. I swear it.”

Papa rolls his eyes. “It is marriage. Not murder. We have cause to rejoice, not mourn.”

Right now, I’d prefer murder to marriage.

I can’t seem to breathe properly. Every time I try to suck in a breath, my chest convulses as another sob is wrenched out of me.

My father looks at me in disdain before shaking his head, informing me, “Vito promises me that Dino is a good boy and he’ll treat you well. Like a princess. And you will be a princess in their family. Loved and respected by all, much like you are here. Now stop this nonsense. It’s done.” He sends a warning look to Miguel. “Nothing can be done. A deal has been made. The Castillo’s and the Gambino’s united through marriage.” My father laughs. “We should be celebrating,” he places his fingers under my chin, lifting it to look up at him, “not crying, gatito.” He wipes away my tears, kissing my cheek. “You will accompany me to dinner tonight. We meet with Vito and Dino.”

Immediately, Miguel bites out, “I’m coming too.”

My father looks down at his son. After a short while, he nods. “Yes. You should.”
Knowing Miguel will be there eases the tension in my body.

He won’t let anything happen to me.
He won’t.

Later that afternoon, we meet the Gambino’s at one of their many restaurants.
I haven’t met them before but I know who they are as soon as I see them. Men like my father, they have a certain air about them. Their character demands attention. They’re mesmerizing. Men want to be them and women wish to warm their beds.
I never understood this. They never affected me the way they affected other people.

The older man stands a second before the younger man stands. They both smile over at us. A few feet away from the table, Vito holds out his arms to my father. “Eduardo.”

My father, void of expression, steps into Vito’s arms, they slap at each other’s backs in a comfortable man hug. “Vito. Thank you for having us.”

I peek up at the men. Both dressed in exquisite suits, I can’t help but notice how attractive the younger man is. Even for an older man, Vito is handsome, with smiling eyes and salt and pepper hair. I notice the younger man reach up, pulling at the tie around his neck, loosening it. The small gesture makes me realize that I’m not alone in this situation. Dino is likely as pissed about this arrangement as I am.
This calms me somehow.

Vito steps towards me, ushering his son forward. “This must be Alejandra.” Vito reaches out to take my limp hand, kissing the back of it. He looks down to his son. “Lei è così piccola.”

Dino looks down at me, his hazel eyes dancing. He holds out his hand, waiting patiently for me to place my hand in his, unlike his father who took the liberty on his own. Hesitantly, I place my hand in his and his smile widens, dazzling me. “Please excuse my father, he doesn’t mean to be rude, he was merely saying that you’re so small. Petite.”

I know this. My sisters and I all have my mother’s build and coloring. Standing no taller than 5’1 with thick, straight black hair worn to my waist and warm brown eyes, I realize many would consider me pretty. My mother told me that beauty was a gift and to never use my beauty to get what I want, that I must remain humble.

The closer Dino gets, the harder my stomach flutters.

He really is a beautiful man. Tall with broad shoulders and a narrow waist, high cheekbones, a strong chin, full lips and smiling hazel eyes. His large hand cocoons mine, his lips descend and as his lips touch the skin of my knuckles, my stomach is sent into an uproar.

As he lets me back, he mutters, “I can see why your father hides you away. The most precious gems are usually kept locked in a safe place.”

I can almost hear Miguel scoff behind me. Holding out his hand, he introduces himself. Eyeing my brother, Dino smiles while shaking his hand. “You love your sister.”

A statement.

Miguel, neither confirming nor denying this fact, pulls his hand away. Dino holds up his hands in a placating gesture. “I get it. I got sisters myself. And two brothers.” Dino looks down at me. “I’d do anything to keep them safe.” Pausing a moment, he steps closer to Miguel and utters quietly, “Your sister will be safe with me.” Side-eying me, he goes on, “Hell, maybe one day she’ll even love me. And when we’re married, you and I will be brothers. Which means you and your sisters will be included as such and will be placed under my protection. I’d give my life to keep you all safe.”

As far as winning Miguel over, I think Dino claims first place in his opening argument.

We sit and as my father and Vito chat away, Miguel – deciding he’s given Dino his blessing – talks business with Dino. I watch how Dino conducts himself and I’m impressed. He’s equal parts serious and witty, throwing Miguel off completely. Catching my brother laughing with Dino is unnerving.

This is really happening.
This is the man I’ll be marrying.
My chest squeezes.

I’m not sure I’m ready for this, not that anyone gives a fuck.

Standing suddenly, Dino turns to our fathers and announces, “Excuse me, gentlemen. I’d like a moment with Alejandra.” He turns to me, his lip curving. “I’ve neglected her far too long this evening.”

Miguel looks over at me and his eyes shout approval. My father smiles up at Dino as Vito nods in agreement. “Of course. But try not to be too long. We still have much to discuss.”

Not given much of a choice, I stand and smooth down my black dress. Taking my hand, Dino places it in the crook of his elbow, leading me away. We walk slowly, comfortable in our silence and I’m surprised to find myself feeling completely safe walking next to this man. Opening the door for me, I step outside. He motions for me to sit at one of the outside tables, I do as I’m told.

I always do as I’m told.

Dino sits and watches me closely. “You haven’t said a word. Not one.”

I shrug. What does he want me to say?

His eyes soften. “I know this isn’t easy. Believe me, I threw a shit fit when my father told me what he wanted me to do.” He scoffs. “I mean, c’mon, I’m only twenty-five. I don’t want to get married,” for some reason my chest pangs, “and for some reason, I don’t think you want to either.”

I find my voice. “I don’t.”

He smiles warmly. “Please, don’t spare my feelings or anything.”

I can’t help it. I dip my chin to hide my smile, but he catches it. “Would you look at that?” He chuckles before sobering. “You’re very pretty, Alejandra. Gorgeous, actually.”

My face heats quickly as my heart beats faster.

Dino reaches over the table, taking my hand. I look up into his eyes. He asks quietly, “Do you think you can give me a chance? I’d like to try.” He pauses a moment. “We have to try.”

He’s right. We have to.

And it could be worse. I mean, he’s attractive and charming and funny, and he seems to like me.

Averting my eyes, I tangle my fingers through his and whisper, “Yes.” I swallow hard. “I- I want to try.”

Dino stands and wraps his arms around me, holding me tight. My sudden surprise is pushed aside as I realize I need the comfort as much as he does. I gently snake my arms around his middle, resting my head against his chest, clutching at him for support, finding comfort in the soft beating of his heart. He kisses the top of my head. “I know this isn’t an ideal situation but I think we can make it work. We know how our families are. We know what they expect of us. I’d like to be your friend.” He pulls back. “I think-” He clears his throat. “I think I could love you. I think we could love each other.”

My throat thickens. I try to speak but all that comes out is a pained grunt. Lowering my face, wetness trails my cheeks.

I’m scared.

I hate myself for crying. But Dino doesn’t.

Lifting my chin, he shushes me, kissing my cheek. “Bella, don’t cry. Please don’t cry.” Before I know what’s happening, his lips cover mine. As quickly as he kisses me, he pulls away, holding me once again. I grip at shirt, crying. He mutters, “Don’t worry, Alejandra. I’ll keep you safe.”

His words calm me.

Like I said… It could be a lot worse.

Fast forward six years…

My stomach presses into the mattress. Fingers dig into my hips, holding me down. I breathe rapidly through my nose, fighting the pain. Biting into the pillow to stop myself from crying out I think back to my grandmothers advice as my husband masturbates on the sofa, smirking at my tear streaked face while watching his brother rape me.

The worse they treat a girl usually means the more they like them.
If that is the case, my husband must really love me.

He must love me to death.

GOD FUCKING DAMN, SHIT, THIS PROLOGUE IS KILLING ME. EVERYTHING IS NICE AT FIRST, AND THEN BAM! MIND-BLOW.
